Nowadays, whenever you buy a car or a four wheeler from a showroom, you do so by registering the showroom vehicle. But many times it happens that defense personnel buy a car from their duty station and get it registered at home station. Therefore, it is very important for the Defense Person to know what documents to take from the showroom while buying a car and how to register the vehicle.

If you have bought a vehicle and brought it to the home town and you have not taken any documents from the showroom, then it becomes very difficult to register the vehicle.

Let's talk about how to get a vehicle registration done.

Car registration process

All the necessary documents for vehicle registration are available from the car showroom itself. Whenever you go to the showroom to pick up a car, take your address proof to the place where you want to register the car. If you want to register the car at your duty station itself, then you can take the serving certificate.

If you want to do vehicle registration at the home station, then you can carry identity proof like driving license, voter card, aadhar card. On the basis of this identity proof, the showroom prepares the bill for your vehicle. Enter the address in the bill where you want to register. Apart from this, it must also be known that where you want to register the vehicle, which are the first 4 letters of the vehicle registration.

After this, the showroom owner prepares the following documents and gives you.

Documents provided by car showroom

1. Temporary number slip
2. Insurance copy
3. GST Invoice
4. Form 22
5. Sales Certificate (Form 21)
6. Vehicle rate list

The above documents will be provided by the showroom owner at the time of delivery of the car. Vehicle Rate List is not a compulsory document but sometimes it is required at the time of vehicle registration. Apart from this, if you do not do insurance from the showroom, then you can do insurance agent or online car insurance.

It is very important to have car insurance at the time of vehicle registration. The showroom manager delivers the car only after the car is insured.

Now let's talk about those documents which you get from SDM office and have to provide yourself.

Forms 4 to 7 given above are available from the SDM office. The documents received from the showroom and the above-mentioned documents are to be submitted in a file and submitted to the SDM office.

After this, on the day of vehicle passing in the SDM office, take your new car there. On the same day, the clerk in the SDM office also traces the chassis number of the car on the form with a pencil and passes the vehicle and affixes the stamp and signature.

After this, the slip of vehicle registration fee (road tax) is deducted in the SDM office. Road tax varies from state to state. This fee depends on the ex-showroom price of the car. Generally it ranges between 4% to 10% of the ex-showroom price of the car.

The car number is received through message within 3 to 7 days of depositing this fee. 

After this the customer has to deposit the fee for HSRP (High Security Registration plate) number plate. The number plate is received at the given address within a week of this fee. This number plate has to be taken by going to the place where the fee is deposited.

Vehicle registration certificate is also available within 15 to 25 days.
