The Canteen Stores Department (CSD) plays a crucial role in providing essential services to defense personnel. To further improve and streamline facilities for defense personnel, the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence recently approved significant changes to the car entitlements from the CSD Canteen. In a letter issued on November 30th, notable adjustments were made to the car purchase limit, proving to be highly advantageous for defense personnel.
Commencing from February 1, 2024, the new policy allows defense personnel in pay levels 3 to 5, encompassing various ranks, to purchase a maximum of four cars from the CSD Canteen. This marks a noteworthy increase from the previous limit of two cars. Under the new policy, the first car can be acquired after five years of service, and there should be an eight-year gap between the purchases of two cars.
Unlike the previous policy, which allowed the purchase of the first car during service and the second post-retirement, the revised policy permits the acquisition of the first car after five years of service. Moreover, defense personnel can now purchase up to four cars either during their service or after retirement, making this policy more flexible and beneficial for those who did not avail themselves of CSD Canteen car entitlements during their active service. However, there is no change in CSD Car Price limit in new policy.
For defense personnel in pay levels 6 to 9, predominantly comprising Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), the new policy allows the purchase of a lifetime total of five cars from the CSD Canteen. The first car can be bought after five years of service, and a similar eight-year gap between the purchases of two cars is mandated. This represents a substantial increase from the previous limit of three cars.

Additionally, defense personnel opting for an Electric Vehicle (EV) for the first time can purchase their next car after six years instead of the standard eight-year gap. However, the subsequent car can only be acquired after an eight-year interval.
This policy represents a positive step for defense personnel, as it extends the privilege to JCOs and other ranks to purchase up to five and four cars, respectively, from the CSD Canteen over their lifetime. Furthermore, efforts have been made to enhance the policy by removing the limits on service and retirement, making it more favorable for the beneficiaries.
